Newsletter #8A
Hello Friends
The newsletters that have been sent out in the past have all contained two parts. One portion has been about nutrition and the other, about exercise. Susan Dopart our contributing dietician has written a very powerful piece that I would like to send out on its own. It so important a message I'm afraid that any other parts to this newsletter might dilute the nutrition passage The exercise potion (part B) will follow in approximately 2 weeks hopefully by then even the people that take awhile to get to their E mail will have read this.
Stay tuned for part B.
Visceral Fat The Beast
Different types of dietary fat exist, but have you ever thought about fat contained within the body? There are 2 types of fat: visceral and subcutaneous. Subcutaneous fat is the padding beneath your skin and is not a health risk unless excessive. Visceral fat is the fat that accumulates in and around the abdominal region, and is referred to as belly fat, or having a beer belly.
Visceral fat is dangerous due to the inflammatory hormones it secretes. Many people know that belly fat is not attractive, but do not realize it is metabolically active tissue with blood vessels running throughout that can be dangerous or even deadly. A study done over ten years ago examined what would happen when visceral and subcutaneous fat was watched in a Petri dish. The visceral fat released 3 times more toxic inflammatory chemicals than the subcutaneous fat. Visceral fat is dangerous for a variety of reasons:
- It has a direct route to the liver and can negatively increase liver function tests such as cholesterol
- It is linked with dumping more inflammatory hormones into your body which can affect your heart, kidney, and brain
- It is associated with insulin resistance which is an inability of your body to respond appropriately to your own insulin, which increases fat storage and blood sugars
- It is connected with increased rates of cancer and cancer like growths in the body
Men with a waist circumference larger than 40 inches, or women greater than a 35 inch waist, are at a high risk of disease due to increased visceral fat. To measure your waist, place the tape measurement around the circumference of your waist at the point of your belly button. This measure is more important than the number on the scale: waist size is more important than weight.
It is important to remember that visceral fat did not come on overnight, and will not come off easily without a healthy balanced diet and consistent regular exercise program. This type of fat can be stubborn and consistency to going the distance is required if you want to see permanent body and health changes. Recent research has linked just 30 minutes of exercise per day to a 50% decrease in mortality. Those who are active are much less likely to develop high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and senile dementia. If there ever was a magic bullet to lowering fat in the body and increasing health this is as good as it gets.
Please forward this to everyone that you believe may benefit from this newsletter
